The ‘Exotic’ wagers often reward horse bettors with big payoffs on Kentucky Derby Day. In the last ten years, the average return on a $2 exacta bet has been a whopping $1,547! Of course, when the horse who goes in as the favorite wins, the exotics aren’t as nearly as lucrative.

The lowest Kentucky Derby exacta the past 10 years came in 2000 when 2-1 favorite Fusaichi Pegasus combined with sixth choice Aptitude for $60. Premiere Pegasus, a contender in the 2011 Derby, is the offspring of Fusaichi Pegasus.

The highest payout on an exacta in the past ten years was in 2005 when longshots, Giacomo and Closing Argument, came in first & second. That exacta bet paid out $9,814.80.

Trifectas on Kentucky Derby Day were even more rewarding during the same period, they averaged a return of $22,263. That’s amazing compared to the overall average return at Churchill Downs in 2009 $1,075.08.
